Health insurance in Germany
In Germany there is generally an obligation to hold health insurance. Whether statutory or private applies to you depends on your personal situation — for example employment, income, residence status and family situation.
Two systems, one goal
Which option is available to you is not a matter of taste; it depends on legal requirements.
Statutory health insurance (GKV)
The standard case for many employees. Contributions are based on income; family members can be covered without extra contributions under certain conditions. The catalogue of benefits is largely defined by law.
Private health insurance (PKV)
Relevant in particular for self-employed people, civil servants and employees above the income threshold. Contributions and benefits depend on the chosen tariff and on health underwriting.
