eVB and car insurance

To register a vehicle in Germany you usually need an electronic confirmation of insurance (eVB). It is issued by an insurer — not by an authority and not automatically by this website.

The usual process

  1. 1 · Clarify vehicle details

Vehicle type, planned registration date and keeper details are collected.

  2. 2 · Choose a tariff

Third-party liability, partial or fully comprehensive cover, deductibles and further modules are discussed.

  3. 3 · Request the eVB

The insurer issues the eVB number if the requirements are met.

  4. 4 · Registration

With the eVB and the remaining documents, registration takes place at the responsible registration office.

Questions that come up often

  • How a no-claims certificate from abroad may be taken into account — this is decided by the respective insurer
  • Which driving licence details are relevant
  • Which deadlines apply if you already have a registration appointment
